Products And Process
What actually goes onto kitchen cabinets, and is it different from wall paint?
Completely different. Cabinet painting uses furniture-grade coatings, either a waterborne alkyd enamel that levels well and tints to thousands of shades, or a two-component polyurethane that mixes a hardener in and cures much harder. Both are low in volatile content and both are sprayed. Your quote states which of the two your kitchen receives.
Do the doors really have to leave the house?
They do, and the finish quality depends on it. Filtered booth air keeps grit off a wet film, temperature holds steady, and each front lies horizontal while it flashes off. Carcasses and face frames are immovable, so their coats happen at home behind taped sheeting.
Will the house smell of paint for days afterward?
Nothing like the old solvent lacquers. Whatever smells strongest is produced inside the booth, nowhere near your address, and what goes onto the carcasses at home is waterborne, low in volatile content, and gone quickly once air is moving. In apartment and tower buildings, where air travels between units, that is the whole point.
Price And Quotes
Is cabinet painting genuinely cheaper than new doors or a new kitchen?
By a wide margin here. Expect $2,500 to $4,500 across a whole kitchen, $3,000 to $8,000 for fresh fronts hung on carcasses you already own, and something in an entirely different order for replacement cabinetry when the average local house changes hands near $543,000. What governs your job is the figure on the written quote.
Is the work insured, and what does the quote cover?
We are fully insured for all the work we do. The written quote lists the products, coats and scope in plain terms before anybody signs. Knocks, standing water, scouring products or hard use before the film has cured can mark any finish, so care in the first weeks matters.
Are the insides of the cabinets included?
Interiors are in only when the quote puts them in, since they cost real money rather than a little extra. Box backs, side walls and shelving close to double the area being sprayed, and every adjustable shelf must come out and be finished front and back. A great many people colour the frames and fronts and leave the insides alone.
Planning And Booking
How far ahead should cabinet painting be booked?
A few weeks out is typical, and the diary stretches further through spring and into the fall. Booking ahead also lets the colour question settle, because a sprayed sample needs to stand in the room for days before a fair judgement is possible. One damaged door can often be slotted in faster.
Should the counter or backsplash be replaced first?
Change them first if they are changing at all, since dropping a new top in afterward chips and scratches finished frames. Cabinet painting is the last stage of a kitchen refresh, following the top, the tile and the plumbing. Where the top is staying put, judge the sample door beside it.
What happens if one door turns out to be beyond saving?
That door comes out, a new one takes its place, and it goes through the colour with everything else until nobody can pick it out. A rail swollen by a dripping sink, or a panel split down its centre, is a fault in one door and a fresh one runs a few hundred dollars. Everything is sprayed in the same session, so the match is exact.
Care, Wear And Materials
How should painted cabinets be cleaned?
Mild dish soap, warm water and a soft cloth cover everything the finish wants. Scouring pads, powdered cleansers and solvent-based sprays will dull or cut the film, and the damage is worst in the opening weeks. Lift spills promptly instead of letting them stand, particularly near the sink.
Why do painted cabinets show a hairline in winter here?
Windsor swings from weeks of high indoor humidity in summer to a hard drop once the furnace runs, and solid wood moves with that. A fine line at a panel edge or a face-frame joint in February that closes again by July is the wood breathing rather than the cabinet painting failing. Rail-and-stile oak shows it more than birch slab doors do.
Can melamine and thermofoil doors be painted at all?
Where the surface is sound, cabinet painting sits happily on a waterborne bonding primer meant for slick material. Where a vinyl skin has begun lifting it does not, because coating never glues that skin down again and the release simply continues out of sight. Whatever sits next to the dishwasher or above the stove gets inspected first, because failure starts there.
